OPINION: Do We Really Need an R Rated 'Batman v Superman'?

“No one gives a fuck about Clark Kent taking on the Batman.”

In the wake of Deadpool’s runaway box office success it looks like many other comic book properties will be getting the R Rated treatment. The first to come out of the woodwork was Fox’s own Wolverine 3 (to be based on the ‘Old Man Logan’ story), which has seemingly been confirmed to be rated R. Following this was the announcement that the MPAA have given the director’s cut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice an R rating.

While there has been a slight backlash to this oncoming R rated frenzy, I maintain that in this specific situation we should be excited. The version of the film that will be released in theaters on March 23, will still keep a relatively family friendly PG-13 rating. This is best for everyone as the film’s box office won’t suffer and I’ll still be able to take my younger brother to go see it in IMAX without scarring him for life.

However when the Blu-Ray is released towards the end of the year, I’ll be able to treat myself to the same epic superhero showdown but without the bloodless punches and nippleless sex scenes that are necessary in a PG-13 film. Having both versions of the film is great because people over the age of 17 will be able to see the film the director intended, while those not quite old enough can still enjoy the same spectacle.

While not every property is right for gory showdowns and graphic sex scenes, I think it would work for this dark and gritty universe that DC has established. All of this said, I don’t think we can expect anything too much more intense that what will be in the theatrical cut, but for those of us who enjoy extended editions and directors cuts, this is very welcome news.

“Tell me, do you bleed?” “… You fucking will.”
