A couple years ago, David Fincher ( Fight Club, Se7en, Gone Girl), was announced to have been working with Disney, developing a 3D adaption of the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It was said to be a “reinvention” of Captain Nemo’s adventures, and an ‘epic, vast journey’. However, due to conflicting visions of the film’s casting, Fincher and Disney have sadly parted ways.
Recent news suggests that Disney has brought back the project, with Deadline reporting that director James Mangold (The Wolverine) has signed on. The latest Captain Nemo draft includes script work by Sebastian Gutierrez (The Eye). Although Mangold is about to begin production on Hugh Jackman’s final outing as Wolverine, he will have all hands on deck once finished.
Interesting enough, in vein of the Serkis-Favreau Jungle Book competition, there is also another adaption of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea coming, helmed by Director Bryan Singer (X-men: Apocalypse). That is currently in development with Fox studios, with a 2016 release window.
What do you guys make of this? Does Fincher's departure worry you?
