OPINION: WHY LEO SHOULDN’T WIN BEST ACTOR

“He slept in a dead animal”

“He ate a fish”

“It was cold on set”

Who cares? Since when was acting all about the weird shit you do behind closed doors to get into character? Leo was good in The Revenant. He was damn good. But I think people are getting swept up in the momentum of the film and aren't realizing that maybe he doesn’t deserve the award. Professional wrestlers go through hell to keep their bodies in shape, and work hard at their craft, but they don’t give John Cena the Oscar because he worked out the hardest. They should give it to whoever did the best job in their film. And for my money that was absolutely Michael Fassbender.

The bottom line for me, is that DiCaprio didn’t show enough range in The Revenant. He played “determined, stoic and angry” exceptionally well, but that’s about it. We see glimpses of other emotions, but he doesn’t really have a lot to work with outside of those three. Which isn’t anyone’s fault, it worked for the script and for the movie. However in Steve Jobs, Michael Fassbender runs the full gamut of emotions. We see him sad, angry, happy, excited, nervous, jealous, scared and much more. Not only this, he plays each one, perfectly. While watching The Revenant, I was very conscious that I was watching Leo give a great performance. I was lost in Fassbender, I had to actively remind myself it was him.

Leonardo DiCaprio is a fine actor and I have no doubt that he’ll one day win an Academy Award. However, each year he’s been nominated, he’s lost deservingly. Do you really think he should have won over Matthew McConaughey? Or Forrest Whitaker? Forget Leo; genius Cinematographer Roger Deakins has been nominated 13 times and never won. I don’t see why the Internet has rallied behind him more than anyone else. Many other talented actors are yet to win an Oscar, yet no one seems to care about Johnny Depp, Amy Adams, Edward Norton, Tom Cruise or Harrison Ford. The list goes on.

But he’ll probably win because it was cold on set and he ate a raw fish.

Who do you think should take home the Oscar on Monday? Is it Leo's turn? Let us know at paperclipnews@gmail.com
