It's a shame that Michael Bay's name can either make or break a film. He's an accomplished action director, that arguably cemented himself as the modern king of blockbusters, by helming the incredibly successful Transformers franchise. When he deviates away from what the studios want, and directs a 'passion project', Bay really shines. 13 Hours is an expertly crafted action film that did well with separating itself from the current political climate. It shys away from being an overly stylized blockbuster, and succeeds in appearing small, but not cheap. Michael exercises incredible restraint, but at the same time shows us the incredible true story of what took place on an infamous night in a troubled Middle Eastern region. The performances are subtle... there's very little showmanship. John Krasinski and James Badge Dale in particular are fantastic. If you can leave your political baggage at the door, then you'll most likely enjoy this riveting war film that raises important questions. I hope to see Michael Bay venture into making more adult films, and retire from the Transformers series. The man knows how to direct, he just needs to pick the right projects. Overall it's gritty, claustrophobic and incredibly intense. Definitely worth the price of admission.

4.2/5
